5 tips before your Skype interview

Mar 27, 2019 | Careers blog

There are many interview tips out there, and it’s easy to get lost in all the recommendations. Today we are sharing a selection of 5 solid tips we believe will help you to nail your next Skype interview. So if you have one coming up, read on!

Be on time

You only get one chance to make a good impression. Being late for your interview will not help with that. Aim to be ready around 10-15 minutes before the scheduled time. However, sometimes things can happen that are beyond your control and you might run late. If you think you will be late contact your recruiter immediately let them know about the delay. It’s better to communicate that straight away than to not show up on time.

Do your research

Before the interview, consider reading about the company you have applied for. Perhaps you could check their website and social media channels to see how they communicate and get a feel for who they are and what they stand for. Write down any questions you might have about the company and be sure to ask them during your interview.

Test out your Skype

Even if you use Skype regularly, you should always expect the unexpected. So before the interview make sure to check your Skype account and tee up a test call with a friend. Make sure your Skype software is updated and that you haven’t forgotten your password. Imagine the horror of going to start up Skype minutes before your interview only to realize then that you can’t remember your login!

Skype interview is still an interview

Although a Skype interview may not feel as intense as a face to face interview, make sure to take it seriously. All the normal rules for a “regular interview” apply here too. The recruiter might ask you about your motivation, your background, and the skill set for the position you have applied for.

Think about your surroundings

When preparing for a Skype interview consider what the interviewer will see in the background. A messy bedroom may send the wrong idea about your organizational skills. The safe option would be a blank or neutral background that will not distract you or the interviewer during the call. Try to find a quiet and dedicated space that will help you concentrate and ace your interview!
